Neha Jhunjhunwala & Kavita Jhunjhunwala
Yes, it’s the classic “started from the garage”, – well actually room story. My mother, Kavita Jhunjhunwala, started off by designing bed covers and cushion covers using spare material from my family’s silk business. Her creativity got noticed fairly quickly, the word spread in Kolkata and ‘The Cushion Project’ was born.
I, Neha Jhunjhunwala, have graduated in textiles from Philadelphia University, USA over a decade ago. At that time, I was working in my family’s export business and had the privilege to work with the largest brands of the fashion and home décor world including Max Mara, Chanel, JAB and Harlequin. Understanding the different needs of markets across the world was challenging but extremely fulfilling and gave me a unique perspective to design.
Everything was going great till recession hit the world market. But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. During a work trip to New York, as expected I had a disappointing visit because of the slowdown in the world economy. So just to overcome a not so happy day, I visited Crate and Barrel. While I was paying for my shopping, the lady at the cash counter asked me- “Aren’t you Indian? Why are you buying everything that is Made in India”. That just struck me. I realized that’s exactly what we are going. Making these exquisite fabrics and made ups and exporting them to different parts of the world!
Coming back home, and having the brand name my mother had already established, we established our flagship store in 2008 and The Cushion Project gained recognition as a home décor destination in Kolkata. One day a customer came up to me and said, “I just feel happy coming to Onset”. Those words had a profound effect on me and gave us the confidence that we can really make it big.
The Cushion Project is an assurance for the ingenuity of designs. Our focus is on creating high end and exquisitely designed home textiles products (cushion covers, bedcovers, runners, throws, mats). Our team of brilliant designers and highly skilled tailors create these products, and help us realize our motto to “convert your house to a home”.
We believe that when we retire to our homes after a busy day we need to unwind and feel relaxed. We believe that a home is a reflection of who you are. Hence, we offer our customers a wide range of fabrics, designs and colors to chose from so that everyone has something that suits their space and style. We feel proud to say that everything in our collection is designed and manufactured in India. At The Cushion Project, we work very closely with hand weavers and hand embroiderers to keep the human touch alive in our creations.
